Growing up, we never really watched football. This is partly to blame on my hometown team, the Washington Redskins, who are not very good….
Yet, it’s probably more to do with having two gay dads. I know all the rules and technical terms in figure skating, mind you, but I have a very minimal understanding of football. (I also don’t really understand baseball either… beloved American sports really elude me).
But, it’s my goal (before I die) to understand the intricacies of football. And last weekend, I had the perfect opportunity to begin my football sports culture immersion*.
My aunt and Patty are both big Jets fans and often go to games, tailgating with friends. So when they invited me to a game, how could I say no? Plus, I mean give me an opportunity to cook and I’m in!
What a better way to understand this elusive sport than hanging out with a bunch of Jets fans for four hours drinking in a parking lot before the game?
I decided to go all out for my first tailgate! My menu included:
– Jalapeno Poppers (filled with a ground lamb, red onion and cream cheese mixture)
– & Beer Braised Brats with Peppers and Onions
(Rejected titles of this post include: “Embracing my inner Guy Fieri” and “Tailgating 101: Cooking with Cream Cheese”)
Plus, master tailgater Dave made amazing ribs, steak and rack of lamb! Add in some beers, and homemade jello shots, and you’ve got yourself a gluttonous afternoon!
And the game was super fun! I didn’t understand everything… I felt a little like a wolf in sheep’s clothes… but by the end, I was into it and on feet with the rest of the stadium watching the Jets win again Buffalo! And we had really amazing seats!
All in all, it was a great first tailgating experience and first Jets game! Who knows, maybe I do like football after all… Lets go Jets!
* Apparently since moving to Brooklyn, I’ve embraced my inner Sporty Spice, having gone to the US Open, a Mets Game and now a Jets game!
